The Trip
Iceland has a way of making you feel like you've stepped into another world. From dramatic waterfalls and black sand beaches to glaciers, volcanoes, and landscapes that seem almost unreal, it's a destination that delivers adventure around every corner.
For this couple, a trip to Iceland was about more than seeing incredible scenery. It was their first international adventure together and a chance to celebrate their wedding anniversary. The goal was to create a memorable experience while keeping the logistics manageable and allowing them to explore at their own pace.
And that's exactly what made a seven-day, self-guided tour of Southern Iceland such a great fit!
Why Iceland Is a Great Destination for First-Time International Travelers
Planning for your first international trip can feel a little intimidating. Between navigating a new country, figuring out transportation, and deciding which sights are worth your time, it's easy to get overwhelmed before you even leave home.
Iceland can be a wonderful introduction to international travel, particularly for travelers not comfortable driving in a new environment. (They drive on the same side as us!)
Many of the country's most iconic sights are accessible along or near the famous Ring Road, which circles the island. For travelers focusing on Southern Iceland, a well-planned route offers an incredible variety of scenery and experiences without needing to change hotels every night.
With the right itinerary, you can enjoy the freedom of independent travel while having a clear plan for where you're going and what you don't want to miss.
For this couple, a self-guided adventure offered the perfect balance: independence, flexibility, and an itinerary designed to make the most of their time in Iceland.
The Experiences That Made This Trip Unforgettable
One of my favorite parts of planning a trip is finding experiences that turn a vacation into something truly memorable and makes it uniquely yours. Iceland makes that especially fun because the adventures here are anything but ordinary!
During their seven days exploring Southern Iceland, these travelers experienced:
Snorkeling between two continents
Imagine slipping into crystal-clear glacial water at Silfra, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. It's an extraordinary way to experience Iceland's unique geology—and certainly not your average snorkeling excursion!
Walking on a glacier
Iceland's glacial landscapes are breathtaking, and a guided glacier walk gives you the opportunity to experience this incredible environment up close. It's the kind of adventure that makes you appreciate just how different Iceland is from anywhere else.
Exploring an ice cave
There's something almost otherworldly about stepping inside a natural ice cave and seeing the layers, textures, and colors of glacial ice surrounding you. It's an unforgettable addition to an Iceland itinerary and a perfect example of how a few carefully chosen experiences can make a trip extra special.
These experiences complemented the natural beauty of Southern Iceland and gave the couple a wonderful mix of exploration, adventure, and once-in-a-lifetime memories.
When Travel Plans Don't Go Quite as Planned
Of course, even the most carefully planned trips can come with a surprise or two.
Just three days before their scheduled departure, Icelandair's mechanics announced a strike that threatened to disrupt their travel plans.
Not exactly the kind of pre-vacation surprise anyone wants!
Fixer mode: activated.
I immediately began researching alternatives and presented the couple with several possible solutions. Rather than spending their precious time trying to figure out what to do next, they had options to consider and support as they decided how they wanted to proceed.
Thankfully, the strike was resolved in time, and their trip went ahead as planned.
It's a great reminder that travel planning isn't only about choosing hotels, booking excursions, and building a great itinerary. It's also about knowing what to do when circumstances change—and having someone to turn to when they do.
No travel advisor can prevent every disruption or guarantee that plans will never change. But having someone who can help you understand your options and navigate unexpected challenges can make a stressful situation feel much more manageable.
After all, the days leading up to your vacation should be filled with excitement, not hours of researching backup flights and wondering what happens next.
